A new professional sumo league plans to launch in the United States this fall, aiming to bring the centuries-old sport to a broader audience through touring arena events, season-long competition and a championship format.
And there is an Atlanta connection: The chairman of the new league is Stuart Snyder, who led Turner Broadcasting’s Cartoon Network, Adult Swim, and Boomerang properties.
The Sumo Championship League (SCL) will host live events in major U.S. markets beginning in fall 2026, featuring heavyweight athletes competing in traditional, unscripted sumo matches. The league will use a modern professional structure, with wrestlers earning points throughout the season to qualify for a final championship event.
